Kapralos Christos

Sculptor Christos Kapralos was born in 1909 in Panaitolio, Agrinio. He studied painting under Umv. Argyros at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1929 – 34) with the support of his fellow countrymen Papastratos brothers of the Papastratos tobacco firm (1929 – 34) and in 1935 on a one-year scholarship (granted by the aforementioned brothers) he left for Paris where he stayed until 1940 studying sculpture at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Académie Colarossi. In 1940 he returned to Greece.

Until 1946 he stayed and worked in his village. In 1946 he held his first solo exhibition in Athens at Parnassos Literary Society. He then held solo exhibitions (ceramics) at the Kentrikon Hall (1950) and at the exhibition hall of the newspaper To Vima (1953). From 1951 to 1956, he spent his summers working in Aegina. In 1962 he represented Greece at the Venice Biennale and in 1963 he settled permanently in Aegina. He held numerous solo exhibitions, including those held in the USA (Martha Jackson Gallery in New York – 1963, Park Gallery in Detroit – 1967, Cincinnati Art Museum – 1967), in Toronto, Canada (AIbert White Galleries – 1967) and in Athens (National Gallery – 1981, retrospective exhibition), etc.

He also took part in several group exhibitions, including the Pittsburgh International Exhibition in the USA (1964, 1967), the Venice Biennale (1972) and the Sao Paulo Biennale (1973), etc. Christos Kapralos died in Athens in 1993. He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece. Since 1995, his workshop in Aegina has been operating as a Museum.
