Dimitris Armakolas was born in Athens in 1939. He studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts under M. Tombros (1956 – 1960) and after being granted a scholarship by the University of Athens, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris (1960 – 1962).

He held solo exhibitions in Greece and Switzerland and presented his work in group exhibitions, including the exhibition “Peintres et Sculpteurs Grecs de Paris” (1962), the Salon des Indépendants (1962), the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture (1962 and 1968), the Pan-Hellenic exhibitions (1963, 1965, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1987), etc. He also took part in major international events, such as the Sao Paulo Biennale (1969), the Small Sculpture Biennale in Budapest (1971), the Barcelona Biennale (1975) and others.

Armakolas was assigned with the creation of public monuments and sculptures, and has received several accolades for his work, (1st prize – Pan-Hellenic Youth Exhibition in Athens in 1962, 1st prize for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Piraeus in 1966, for the monument ιν Meligalas in 1972, for his statues in Kalentzi (prefecture of Achaia) and Kavala by the Ministry of the Presidency in 1970, and by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, etc.). Dimitris Armakolas suffered an accident at his laboratory in Athens in 2009 and he died. He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece.
