Papadoperaki Aspasia

Aspasia Papadoperaki (sister of painter Thomas Papadoperakis), was born in Spilia, Crete in 1942. She studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts under N. Nikolaou, G. Pappas, Th. Apartis and D. Kalamaras and stage design under V. Vassiliadis (1966 – 1972). She was granted a scholarship by the Hellenic Organization of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and continued her studies in Paris at the École Des Beaux Arts, in 1975, under Cesar in sculpture and M. Gilli in drawing.

She has presented her work in several exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including those held at the National Gallery (1979), the Goethe Institute (1983), the Stavrakakis Gallery in Heraklion, Crete (1984) and the Basilica of St. Mark, Heraklion, Crete (1986). She has taken part in the group exhibitions Athens Cultural Capital of Europe, the AICA Conference, the Salon de Mai in Paris, the Alexandria Biennale (1980) etc.

She has been commissioned for major projects such as sculptures in public places, including the sculpture of Maria Callas in Madrid Square (Athens), the busts of Nikos Xylouris and Nikos Kitsikis in Heraklion, Crete, of Konstantinos Kavafis in Alexandria, Egypt, of Electra Apostolou and the 1941 – 1944 National Resistance Monument (Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete), the statue of Philip II (Athens, Kyprou Avenue – Papagou) etc. She has also created theatre sets, masks and costumes and her theoretical work is significant. She is a member of the Greek Sculptors Association. In 2009, she was honoured by the Academy of Athens for her overall artistic work.
