Costas Tsaras was born in Pelasgia, Phthiotis, in 1928. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts, in the workshops of Sp. Papaloukas and Y. Moralis, and continued his studies in lithography at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris (1959 – 1962). He lived in Paris until 1971 where he held solo exhibitions at the Galerie de Beaune in 1966, 1967 and 1970.

His work, namely paintings, woodcuts, sculptures, and ceramics, has been presented in several solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (Athens, Brussels, Belgrade, Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Istanbul, Chicago, Stuttgart, etc.) and he has taken part in major international events (Salon d’Automne – 1961 / 1970 / 1971, École de Paris in Fontainebleau – 1966, Rencontre international de Peinture of Aix en Provence in 1971 where he won the 2nd Prize, etc).

He also created sets and costumes for the theatre productions of the tragedies “Oedipus the Tyrant” and “Ajax” that were presented in Johannesburg. He illustrated editions of poems by Kafavis, Sinopoulos, Varnalis, Katsaros, Éluard, Aragon and others. He also illustrated the book “Greek Mythology” by G. Geralis. Costas Tsaras died in Pelasgia, Phthiotis in 1986. In 1988, the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum hosted a major retrospective exhibition of his work and in 1998 a second retrospective exhibition was held at the Art Gallery of the Municipality of Lamia. He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece.
