Mouth Athos. Xenofontos Monastery

George Moschos was born in Alexandroupolis in 1906, and grew up in Volos and in Thessaloniki. He enrolled in the Athens School of Fine Arts but due to financial hardship he drooped out and studied at the Police School of Corfu. He worked as a policeman in Athens, and in 1928, he enrolled once again in the Athens School of Fine Arts in the painting workshop of Parthenis and the engraving workshop of Jean Kefalinos.

Following his graduation in 1935, he travelled to Paris and London for two months to receive training (1937 and 1951). He taught design and decoration at the Papastratios School (1939 – 1954), the American College of Girls in Elliniko (1952 – 1961) and (1967 – 1973) and the “Anatolia” College of Thessaloniki (1962 – 1966).

In 1956 he published texts on Engraving methods in the magazine Zygos. Although he held only a few solo exhibitions (Thessaloniki – 1950, Kavala -1960, Alexandroupolis – 1978), the large retrospective exhibitions at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum – 1982, and at the Nees Morfes art gallery in Athens – 1983) he was an active member of the groups “Free Artists” (Ελεύθεροι Καλλιτέχναι), “Workshop” (Εργαστήρι) and “Stathmi” and took part in the exhibitions organised by them. He also took part in many Biennales and international group exhibitions including the Exposition Internationale in 1937 in Paris, where he was awarded a medal. He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece. George Moschos died in Athens in 1990.
