SCENE FROM THE LIBERATION OF CYPRUS
Painter and engraver George Manoussakis was born in Heraklion, Crete in 1914. He held his first solo exhibition while still at school, at the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion in 1932.
He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1934 – 1939) under Umv. Argyros and Kon. Parthenis. At the same time he attended engraving classes at the art workshop of Jean Kefalinos. In 1936 and 1939 he took part in group exhibitions of works by the students of the Athens School of Fine Arts. During the German Occupation he worked mainly as an engraver.
In 1960 he travelled to France and Italy. He presented his work in numerous solo exhibitions mainly in Athens and Heraklion, including the exhibitions at the Scientists Club of Heraklion (1952), at Zygos art gallery (1957) and Ora art gallery (1969, 1974, 1981, 1986, 1987) in Athens. He also took part in group exhibitions (Pan-Hellenic Exhibitions 1940, 1948, 1952 and 1985, the tribute to the Generation of the 1930s, at Aenaon art gallery in 1994, and in a group exhibition at Zygos art gallery in 1996, etc.). He died in Athens in 2003. He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece.
