Collection of the Heraklion Municipal Art Gallery

Statement by the Mayor of Heraklion, Mr. Vassilis Lambrinos: “The exhibition at the Basilica of Saint Mark gives the opportunity to the people of Heraklion and visitors of our city to see, for the first time, many of the great works of art that the Municipality has in its possession. All works have already been listed, documented and digitised and are now secured against eventual loss, disputes over titles of acquisition and oblivion. Thus, all of us at the Municipality, we feel confident that we have fulfilled our duty in an area of vital importance as regards culture and extroversion.

I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all those who worked tirelessly to make this project a reality and whose contribution to our overall vision for the city of Heraklion is invaluable. In addition to renovations, maintenance of roads and buildings and in parallel with our social policy and several other actions in such difficult times, the promotion of our cultural wealth is one of our key priorities.”

Statement by the Deputy Mayoress for Culture, Mrs. Aristea Plevri: “The art collection of Heraklion Municipality is one of its most valuable movable assets. That is exactly why, from the very beginning of our term, we decided to list, document and –ultimately– save it from oblivion. It is a demanding project, which requires a lot of effort and particular diligence.”

On the opening day, the work of the Heraklion Municipal Art Gallery will be presented at the Ceremony Hall of the Vikelaia Municipal Library at 18:30.
