Perdikidis Dimitris

Dimitris Perdikidis was born in Piraeus in 1922. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1946 – 1950) under Parthenis, Argyros and Georgiadis. He was granted a scholarship by the Spanish government and continued his studies and then settled in Madrid (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, 1953 – 1956). He also engaged in engraving and graphic arts.

Always in close connection with the avant-garde movements of his time, his work (mainly of the 1960s) includes clear references to the political reality of both Greece and Spain. His first solo exhibitions were held in Madrid (1957 and 1958) and were followed by dozens of others in Europe and America and by several group exhibitions. After 1963, his works were exhibited in Greece as well. At the same time, he represented Spain in international events, such as the Sao Paulo Art Biennial (1961) and the Venice Biennale (1964 and 1966). He also participated in Europalia (Belgium, 1982).

He was awarded the First Prize of the School of Graphic Arts of Madrid (1958), the First Prize of the Association of Spanish Art Critics (1961) and the silver medal at the Exhibition for the International Abstract Art Award in Lausanne. In 1985 he returned to Greece and in 1989 he died in Athens. In 2002, a large retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki.
