The Municipal Gallery of Heraklion is a regional Gallery belonging to the Directorate of Culture of the Deputy Mayor's Office of Culture of the Municipality of Heraklion. It possesses a comprehensive collection of works of art, with full archival and historical documentation. It has two exhibition spaces in the city of Heraklion where, as cultural spaces, they contribute to the promotion of cultural heritage, the development of cultural activity and the unhindered communication of citizens with the arts.
The 22/2025 Board of Directors Decision concerns the Operating Regulations of the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion.
The Administrative headquarters of the Municipal Gallery is Heraklion and specifically the building at number 8 Chrysostomou Street, where the offices, archival documents, administrative documents, digital management databases and administrative staff are housed. The exhibition spaces of the Municipal Gallery of Heraklion are:
- Basilica of Saint Mark (Lions Square, Heraklion)
The hall of the Basilica of St. Mark is one of the most important monuments of the city. A cathedral during the Venetian period, dedicated to the Patron Saint of Venice, a mosque during the Ottoman period, a cinema in more recent times, it was reconstructed in 1956, at the initiative of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies. The inauguration of the hall took place with the hosting of the first Cretanological Conference, in 1961. It has hosted important exhibitions and events, such as the exhibition of works by El Greco, the exhibition of Fayum, Cretan Icons, Konstantinos Volanakis, etc. The elected rulers of the city are also sworn in in the Basilica. It belongs to the Municipality of Heraklion with Declarative Deed No. 11307/1931 of the notary of Heraklion Nikolaos Fraggioudakis in fig. with the aforementioned decisions 1807/1927 of the Court of First Instance of Heraklion and 76/1931 of the Court of Appeal of Crete.
