MARKOGIANNAKIS EVAGGELOS

Evaggelos Markogiannakis, whose family originated from Lassithi Plateau, was born in 1874 in Heraklion, Crete. He probably was an apprentice to local icon painter Ioannis Hatzis before submitting a file of his works and obtaining a degree from the Athens School of Fine Arts at a mature age (1936).

He was commissioned with the most important works of his time (iconostases of St. Minas church and St. Titus church in Heraklion, etc.). His religious works are found in many churches all over Crete. Meanwhile, his secular work includes several portraits and focuses mainly on the study of morals. He was very interested in folklore.

Markogiannakis died in 1856 in Heraklion. He was perhaps the most representative painter and icon painter of that period.
